When 23-year-old Sophia Shock's beloved Uncle Andy collapsed with a brutal stroke at 57, she begged the universe for help—then rolled up her sleeves. The Plainfield, Indiana native
was parked on the couch with Andy's dog Alex (now hers to care for) when lightning struck. 'I'd spent so many nights praying for a way to ease Andy's money troubles but had no clue what that could be,' Shock says.
Bills were mounting and the family stared at selling off his belongings to fund care and rehab. 'I looked at Alex in his bandana and thought, that can't be hard to make.' She'd never sewn a stitch in her life.
Shock filmed a TikTok begging people to support her uncle by grabbing a bandana. She had a modest ~500 followers. 'We figured we'd move maybe 20,' she says. She may have underestimated by a hair.
'This is where I get emotional,' she admits. 'I was blown away…never in a million years did I see this going viral. I'd prayed for months after Andy's stroke that something amazing would let me bankroll his care—and the answer came, times a thousand.' To date they've shipped more than 9,500 bandanas to 13 countries and every U.S. state; that first video alone raised $11,500.
What floored her was the instant demand. 'Right after posting, strangers were begging to order immediately. I had to race to build a website because hundreds wanted in!' She didn't even own a sewing machine yet. 'I told my fiancé we were going to the store that same night to buy one,' she laughs. Alex & Andy Pet Bandanas was born.
For a stretch she sewed seven days a week, 12+ hours a day. 'Spending every day at that machine taught me more about myself than I've ever known,' she says. A few helpers now share the load, so she's no longer doing it solo.
She credits the runaway success to 'a story so many families across the planet feel in their bones.' Stroke ranks among the world's top killers; in the U.S., someone falls victim every 40 seconds. 'I had no idea how many lives this touched until now,' she says. 'We're all just human carrying our own battles—watching everyone rally together was genuinely healing. This chapter has rewritten our lives. I can't thank people enough for the outpouring.'
What began as a fundraiser is now a small business, 'and it gives Andy a purpose again,' she says. They've added tees—which Andy designs left-handed after losing function on his right side. Find them at alexandandypetbandanas.com and on TikTok @sophiarae98.
