'It's Like They Just Knew': The Struggling Puppy Who Got Adopted by a Whole Other Family

This isn't your typical adoption tale: a lone, struggling puppy finally thrives after an entire new litter — and his surrogate mom — take him in as one of their own

Back in October 2025, foster mom Lori Comer was looking after a tiny grey pup named Tusche (say it 'toosh') in Northwest Arkansas when something flat-out amazing happened.

Lori has spent years championing foster care for Best Friends Animal Society, the tireless nonprofit on a mission to turn America no-kill — a bold promise to save every recoverable four-legged soul. This past September she welcomed a squirming litter of nine puppies, and little Tusche was the runt who could barely keep pace. While his bulked-up siblings raced ahead, Tusche clawed his way forward ounce by ounce, leaning hard on round-the-clock love from Lori and her Best Friends allies in Northwest Arkansas. Come week eight, his brothers and sisters trotted off to forever families — but Tusche stayed behind, simply too fragile for the big, bright world just yet.

But Tusche's big plot twist was just around the corner.

That fall, Lori got a call from Best Friends asking if she'd consider fostering a mama dog with 11 puppies. The brainstorm: if Lori took in this new mom (affectionately called Donna and the Dynamos), she could try weaving Tusche into the fresh litter to help him beef up. It's not standard practice, but Best Friends vets weighed the risks, took every health precaution, and green-lit the experiment since both litters had been raised in foster care.

Lori said yes on the spot. That first night the whole Dynamos bunch woke up around 2 a.m. in a frenzy, and Lori grabbed her chance. She introduced Tusche by rubbing him along Donna's side while she nursed — one of the moves Best Friends recommended. 'She just looked at him, gave him a sniff, and went back to what she was doing,' Lori says. She set Tusche down with the rest, and Donna and the Dynamos quickly claimed him as family.

Ever since, Tusche has been growing — in size, swagger, and charm — and he spends his whole day with his new littermates, playing, napping, and chowing down. 'You'd never guess he wasn't born into this group,' Lori says.

Any day now, Tusche becomes adoptable. Lori knows the goodbye will sting, but she's thrilled to keep tabs on him as he figures out the world. 'Watching him grow and flourish has just warmed my heart,' she says. 'He's a wonderful little guy, and he's going to give some lucky person a run for their money!'
